Cadw celebrated the 125th anniversary of the construction of Castell Coch in 2016 by sharing some iconic images.
To mark 135 years, I’ve selected some more images that document the history of the castle. The images are from my own collection and articles I’ve researched.
Some of the old photos are in the decade they were used rather than taken.
1891
This view of the courtyard was taken in 1891 by William Booth.
1895
This photo slide was viewed using a magic lantern. The manufacture date of the slide is unknown but it’s believed to be 1895 at the latest.

Late 1890s
This photo is from a stereoview that was probably taken in the late 1890s.
1910s
This photo was taken before 1910 but it was used in lots of colourised postcards sent in the 1910s.
1920s
This is another case where the photo may be earlier but it’s from a postcard sent in 1923.
1990s
This postcard was sent from Machynlleth on 10th September 1991. There are more shots from the 1990s in my decades series.
2000s
I don’t have any postcards or photos in my collection from the 2000s. I’m cheating by including this shot from an episode of Merlin aired in 2010. I’m guessing it was probably filmed in late 2009.
2010s
I took this photo in February 2018. I used it recently as an example of newly painted woodwork in the castle.
2020s
I take a lot of photos of the castle so I was spoiled for choice. I grabbed this shot in April 2024.
