I take lots of photos of Castell Coch but only a few get used in blog posts, so I’ve started this new series to highlight interesting ones. Follow me on Instagram if you’d like to see more photos of the castle and around Tongwynlais.
There’s been some major conservation work over the last two years so I’ve taken lots of photos of scaffolding and cranes. The Well Tower was covered in a decorative wrap from July 2024 until April 2026, while water damage was assessed, the tower dried out and mortar replaced.
The Kitchen Tower has been covered in scaffolding recently but that’s also being removed.
The decorative wrap caused confusion online with some people assuming it was a permanent painting. I happened to be up at the castle when it was removed on the 8th of April 2026.
I took the photo on the right during a special tour of the castle in July 2026. The scaffolding and wrap had been removed and the Well Tower looked fantastic.

I’m often down by the Ironbridge enjoying the view of the River Taff. I love watching the seasons change and clouds reflected in the water.
Paddle boarders and kayakers love this section of the river and I normally capture a few pictures every year.

I use my Cadw Monument Pass to visit the castle a few times every month. I’ve got to know the custodians and volunteers over the years and it’s always interesting to find out what’s going on. I was given a special tour last month that was amazing!
I love visiting the castle as soon as it opens to grab some shots when there’s nobody around. If I’m lucky the light streams through the windows and I can get some atmospheric shots.

Here are a few more shots I’ve taken this year. The castle is being repainted with a newly discovered red paint, which compared to the old deep red in the 3rd photo, is slightly more orange.
