Castell Coch Unwrapped

|

I went for a walk up to the castle this morning and just happened to witness the removal of the fairy-tale banner. The top corners had been unfastened and I waited for a while until the centre section was carefully lowered. Staff used ropes to pull the covering onto the grass in front of the ditch.

The decorative wrap that covers the scaffolding on the Well Tower was installed in July 2024. It caused some confusion online as people were afraid it was a painting directly on the stone.

“A fanciful fairy-tale wrap is decorating the stones of the castle’s Well Tower with spellbinding scenes of magic and mischief.”

Cadw expected the work to take two years and managed to keep the castle open during this essential work.

They explained, “This will include removing material between the stones of the castle walls creating an opportunity for the inner core to dry out. A breathable lime mortar will be used to re-point the Well Tower walls before scaffolding is removed.”

You can see from this photo that the lower section of stones have new pointing.

This comparison shows the castle on 25th March 2026 and 8th April 2026.
